You are attending a conference for young people about climate change. You have been asked to deliver a persuasive speech about how we can reduce plastic usage. Remember to structure the speech to include a greeting and a conclusion.
Good Morning everybody! I am very grateful that you have attended the conference today. Plastic pollution endangers the environment and causes climate change. Many living organisms are facing extinction because of the loss of natural habitat and food. My name is Tom and I will talk about how it causes dreadful impacts, and how we can play our parts to minimise plastic usage.
Have you ever used plastic bags when going to the supermarket? Have you ever used chewing gum? How often in a day? Why do you use it? I guess that you have used it because it is the easiest mouth refresher to get. However, all plastic substances are dangerous for the planet, so I strongly recommend you use them to the minimum.
Some objects seem not to contain plastic in them, but they do. A good example is glitter. Glitter is like bits of dust, but it is, in fact, tiny coloured microplastic. At first, they don't look deadly as they can't even be seen but creatures as tiny as plankton and shellfish are able to consume them and die. Another excellent example is chewing gum; chewing gum is the worst of them all. It contains flavoured plastic! We humans find chewing gum a tasty snack and a good mouth refresher, but the environment despises it. Britons are the second biggest consumers of gum in the world, chewing an estimated one hundred and thirty sticks of gum per person each year! The gum consumed by all people in the UK makes the size of the Eiffel Tower!
Plastic pollution is when it burns. It releases carbon dioxide into the air, which eventually builds up in the Earth's atmosphere and causes greenhouse effect. Eventually, temperature rises, which increases the likelihood of natural disasters happening such as storms, floods and tornadoes. Another problem of plastic pollution is polluting ocean water. Many sea creatures may get killed from ingesting plastic which results in species’ extinction.
We must control plastic pollution by reusing materials such as cloth for shopping bags and metal for water containers. We must reduce chewing gum consumption and stop buying bottled water. We must do this to save our planet!
Thank you for listening.
