"Exams are a waste of time.” Do you agree with this statement? Give your opinion, backing up your points with examples. (two-sided argument)

Exams test learners' understanding of subjects and are used for school admissions. Do they really help students' learning and test their abilities? Or are they a waste of time? I want to think about whether we should use the time preparing for exams for more important things instead.

Some people believe that exams are not a waste of time. Their first reason is that exams give pressure on them to do well. They insist this pressure enhances their learning speed and makes them more enthusiastic to gain new knowledge. Moreover, some people insist that exam results can help schools to tell every student's ability. Finally, some people think when students

prepare for exams with their given resources, they gradually learn to build-up their knowledge and pass exams.

On the other hand, others argue that exams are a waste of time because the pressure grows enormously when students are close to exams and that can affect their mental health. People have reported that many students sweat in exams and suffer from subsequent anxiety. Furthermore, some people argue that exams do not truly show students' natural ability, because they can get higher marks if they practise past paper exams continuously.

Last but not least, some people think that exams won't help students gain practical knowledge about a subject as much as conducting a related project assignment. For example, a student runs a project about gerbils. He studies a live gerbil and records its diet, its exercise routine, its living style, etc. students would learn better from project assignments than they would from studying a book. To sum up, these people believe that the time is better used for project research instead of studying for exams.

Bearing in mind all these arguments put in here, I believe that exams are a waste of time because valuable time could be used more effectively and efficiently with practical studies. Also, students could spend their time enjoy their lives and not stress so much to pass exams while learning new knowledge at the same time.
