Mobile phones are banned from some schools during the school day. Although our school currently allow us to keep mobile phones, they are starting to think about confiscating them before we start in the morning. In our school, some schoolmates object to this, because they feel that phones are another important aspect of their social identity. On the other hand, there are other students who welcome the option to study without distraction. In this discussion, I will talk about whether mobile phones are needed during the school days, or whether they do more harm than good.
Some schoolmates complain that mobile phones should not be removed, because they are beneficial to their learning and relaxation time. They can stop using the phones at any time, if they are disciplined. Mobile phones are portable, so this allows students to learn more quickly whilst being on a journey! For example, schoolmates can search up educational topics on their phones: “What Mount Fuji is”.
On the other hand, another group of schoolmates agrees that mobile phones should be removed, because students spend lessons which are necessary for learning and lunch time on phones, as they are addicted, and they stop engaging with one another. This affects students in the whole school. They all sit at lunchtime and individually engulf themselves on the phone, disregarding everybody around them. Children without phones are lonely with nothing to do. Students can be addicted to the device and develop unhealthy sitting postures or appalling eyesight due to staring at the screen for hours.
Bearing in mind all these arguments put together, I believe that mobile phones should not be allowed in school; school is a place to communicate and not playing with a phone. I would not like to be alone and be watching everybody else being hypnotised by the phone. If students aren’t socialising with other children, it will badly affect their interpersonal skills.
