The difference between failure and success is effort

Our class has applied for Brentwood School Chess Scholarship. Some students use much effort to practise because they believe they will win the scholarship, but they become competitive and stop talking to one another. Going to school is upsetting and the situation is getting worse. Some students hope to ease the situations. In this discussion, I will talk about whether practising daily with much effort would lead to winning every game or whether there is still a possibility of losing the game and hence the scholarship.

Some of our students believe that practising daily would guarantee a certain win in single chess game. They say that it sets hope in their minds and that they feel better whilst playing and concentrate harder on the game. Even more, they believe that “effort changed the success rate” and that they will play their game flawlessly. They also mentioned that they have experienced this before in sports and competitive games so they are a guaranteed victory against their opponents.

Another group of students argue that even if they practise with full effort capability, every day, they still might lose a few games because of their arrogance and unhelpful practice and that it would be a complete waste of time. Some have reported that they have experienced this matter and are sulking because they lose the game. They complain that even their parents tell them off for trying too hard and that they should “give it a break”. Also, a few other students remark that they get mocked by their friends for losing after practising more than them.

Bearing in mind all these arguments put together, I believe that you could still possibly lose the game if you practise daily before the Scholarship Exam. Ultimately, I also hope that everybody enjoys chess and sees improved chess skills so that even if they lose, they will all wear smiles on their faces.
